The United States Government, as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services, was granted a U.S. Patent (#6630507) on October 7, 2003 on any and all uses and applications of: Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants.

The abstract from the US Patent reads as follows:

“Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.”

- View the US patent here -

The patent granted to the US Government and its uses of medical cannabis indicates that they have known for quite some time that cannabis is truly a medicinal plant.

This should be very alarming considering that the US Government has long denied the efficacy of medical marijuana as a medicine, as well as resisting the reclassification of the plant from Schedule 1 (no medical use), terrorizing/incarcerating medical patients and their family members, while at the same time successfully operating a 20+ year Federal Medical Marijuana Program.

It’s patent with the “Department of Commerce” is evident that the US Government is more interested in COMMERCE than it is for the health and well being of it’s citizens. Perhaps an International Patent (if there isn’t one already) by the US Government will make the world realize what a truly remarkable and miraculous plant cannabis really is for humankind.

Prop 19 Loss gives CO a chance at marijuana legalization

The measure to legalize cannabis in California yesterday, also known as Prop 19, was lost with only approximately 46% of Californians voting Yes to legalize the plant.

Fortunately, Colorado activist groups are not deterred by California’s results on Prop 19.

Safer and Sensible Colorado are planning a 2010 statewide initiative to make marijuana legal and regulate it like alcohol.

SAFER and Sensible Colorado released the following statement:

Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER) and Sensible Colorado are working to place a measure on the 2012 ballot that would remove penalties for adult marijuana use and establish a system of regulation for marijuana similar to that of alcohol.

According to a 9 News/Denver Post poll released last week, 46 percent of likely 2010 voters would support such a measure, while just 43 percent would oppose it. The poll echoes previous and recent internal polls showing support for regulating marijuana around 50 percent among 2010 likely voters. The 2012 electorate should be even more favorably inclined toward supporting such a measure.

“California started the race toward legalization but Colorado is going to finish it,” said Mason Tvert, executive director of SAFER, “Coloradans are ready to move forward and bring about a safer, more sensible approach to marijuana.

“For too long our government and the Arrest and Prosecution Industry have been playing a game to keep marijuana illegal for adults,” Tvert said. “That game will soon be over — we’re playing to win in 2012.”

“Over the past five years we have built a large coalition of organizations, elected officials, and citizens across the state,” said Sensible Colorado Executive Director Brian Vicente. “Now that the 2010 election is over we are moving full-steam ahead with a plan to organize, mobilize, and energize our coalition and potential voters throughout Colorado.

“The campaign for legalization in Colorado begins today and will not end until we become the first — or one of the first — in the nation to establish a legal marijuana market for all adults.”

Legalization activists urged from the steps of Oakland City Hall, that Voting Yes on Prop 19 would create jobs, end racism, make the streets safer and ignite a revolution. “Make no mistake,” said Dale Sky Jones, executive chancellor of Oaksterdam University, “the world is watching.”

“Today is a watershed moment in the decades-long history to end failed marijuana policies in this country,” declared Stephen Gutwillig, California director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “Proposition 19 has impacted the national debate on marijuana policy, firmly placing marijuana legalization itself squarely in the mainstream of American politics.”

Oakland City Atty. John Russo, speaking to activists “from the heart,” told the small assembly that “even if we are cheated out of a win today, we have changed the debate from licentious hippies versus straight-arrow cops to one that recognizes this issue in all of its complexity.”

Remember, he said, “like other issues where people are working and have worked for justice and common sense, sometimes it takes a longer road than we would like.”

Richard Lee, founder of Oaksterdam University and the largest contributor ($1.5M) behind the Prop 19 measure, did not address the crowd despite being billed as the main speaker.

If Prop 19 loses, Richard Lee was asked, what will be your take-away?

Lee: “Not enough people voted for it.”

Was it a worthwhile effort?

Lee: “Yeah, we changed the debate.”

Is that enough?

Lee: “Uh huh.”

Will you continue working for legalization?

Lee: “Uh huh.”
